Best Mobile Broadband Editor Chris High orders Vodafone Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband and puts it through its paces ...

Overall Rating for Vodafone Mobile Broadband and Conclusion: 8/10

Vodafone Mobile Broadband is well worth considering as it consistently gave a very usable mobile broadband connection that in most cases was fast enough to stream video. The connection software is easy to use, and we feel Vodafone is a solid company to choose as your mobile broadband provider.

Ease of Ordering: 6/10

USB Modem Ordered: Standard PAYG dongle (Vodafone K3565) in blue with 3GB of data
Total Cost: £30
Date of Order: Weds 19 May 2010

Generally the Vodafone website is laid out clearly. Unfortunately my first effort at ordering ended in a session timeout. I also found that the Terms and Conditions link displayed during the checkout process was not working. For these reasons I had to mark them down on what is otherwise an easy to use website.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband Order Delivery: 9/10

Date of Arrival: Thurs 20 May 2010
Time Taken for Delivery: 1 day
Delivery Firm: Parcelforce Worldwide

Delivery was effected quickly, accompanied by a simple delivery note.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband Ease of Setup: 10/10

The 'Start up and go with mobile broadband' booklet provided is well laid out and very clear. The SIM card was already inserted into the modem, which saved some time. When the modem was plugged in, the Vodafone Mobile Connect software installed smoothly, and after the required computer restart, was ready to use.

Ease of Pay As You Go Top Up

Sorry, we didn't need to perform a Top Up during our testing. Based on our experience of other Pay As You Go mobile broadband providers, we would imagine the Top Up process will be fairly straightforward.

You need to register an account to do the Top Up, and when you have run out of credit, you will be taken to the Vodafone Pay As You Go mobile broadband page to login and do the Top Up.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband Connection Software Usability: 9/10

The Vodafone Mobile Broadband Connection Software has a straightforward interface and is easy to use.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband Connection Performance: 7/10

As well as the results shown below, obtained in June 2010, we have done some more recent testing with a more recent dongle in March and April 2011, so we base our average speed etc on the more recent results.

Fastest mobile broadband speed obtained so far: 2.84 Mb/s Download.
Slowest mobile broadband speed obtained so far: 0.06 Mb/s Download.
Average broadband speed from testing so far: 1.58 Mb/s, based on 17 results.

After testing at a variety of locations, we can conclude that Vodafone general gives a very usable mobile broadband connection. In all but three of the 17 tests performed, the connection was good enough to stream video without pauses. There is a bit of room for improvement in that another provider, Three, gave the very fastest speeds during testing.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband Value for Money: 7/10

Value for money is OK, but the market leader is Three. There's also a minimum TopUp amount enforced which means you may have to pay for more usage than you wanted to.
